I have felt strongly for some time that one of the root causes for new masons departing the craft prematurely is that they have either ceased to be curious about it, have been placed into positions of responsibility before they are duly prepared and/or have not enjoyed the experience as much as we have expected them to. We have discussed this problem ad infinitum but seem to be no closer to a resolution. It is my view that we must firstly recognise that the generations from which we are now drawing our new masons have different life-styles and expectations to we more “senior” members, and that we should endeavour in some way to cater for this while in no way compromising our traditions and landmarks.

One way to do this is to get to know them better, to talk with them to learn their views, and to encourage them to participate actively in social activities, particularly with their partners. Another strategy has been initiated by our new Grand Master, which is to ensure that candidates are not raised until after completing a specified number of lodge attendances. This will mean more effort from their mentors and other members to ensure that they have the opportunities to do so, and to accompany them accordingly. I believe that this will aid in their gaining of sufficient craft knowledge to take on more responsible duties, to widen their range of Masonic acquaintances and thus raise their confidence and enjoyment of the craft.
This methodology is not the panacea for all our ills, but we’ve got to start somewhere and to try any means within the scope of our cable tow.
